Filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson started working on “One Battle After Another” 20 years ago, and though “the script has taken different shapes over many years,” it remains timeless, says producer Sara Murphy.
Written, directed and produced by Anderson, “One Battle After Another” tells the story of washed-up revolutionary Bob (Leonardo DiCaprio), who exists in a state of stoned paranoia, surviving off-grid with his spirited, self-reliant daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti). When his evil nemesis (Sean Penn) resurfaces after 16 years and she goes missing, the former radical scrambles to find her, father and daughter both battling the consequences of his past. Also stars Benicio Del Toro, Regina Hall and Teyana Taylor.

Reactions from the film have been pouring out and they have been positive. Steven Spielberg, who recently moderated a Q&A with Anderson at the Director’s Guild of America theater in Los Angeles, said that he “had a great time laughing all the way” while watching the film.
Speaking about the humor in the film, Anderson says, “The things I think are funny are the things I think are funny, it’s kind of that simple. When you’re on set and you are collaborating with actors, if they are trying to be funny, it’s not going to be funny. Generally, humor can come out of sincerity, or a dedication to something.
“I find humor in peculiar places, for sure, and when you’re on set, if you’re not trying to make an out-and-out comedy, an actor will generally let you know if they are having to try too hard. I will say, though, it’s really nice to go for a cheap laugh if you have a silly idea. Just go for it,” says the BAFTA-winning director.

According to producer Murphy, the film’s story is very grounded and “Paul’s done some incredible world-building, introducing heightened versions of various factions that introduce a myriad of villains and foes and friends along the way. Through all that, it’s a really fun, action-packed thriller from start to finish, with a lot of laughs. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, but at the end of the day is a truly emotional journey of this father and daughter.”
