Singer, songwriter, and producer Cavetown, the moniker of UK-born Robin Skinner, has announced his forthcoming album Running With Scissors, set for release on January 16 via Futures Music Group. Alongside the announcement, he has shared the shimmering new single and video “Rainbow Gal,” a synth-laced love song inspired by his relationship. The track, built on 8-bit textures and glitchy vocals, reflects the grounding comfort his partner brings to him even from afar. “‘Rainbow Gal’ is like a light display turned into a song, she brings all the color into my life,” says Skinner.

Cavetown has grown from uploading songs in his Cambridge bedroom to becoming one of the most beloved voices of his generation, amassing billions of streams and six RIAA Platinum singles. His music, ranging from intimate lo-fi beginnings to expansive indie-pop, has offered solace to millions worldwide. Along the way, he’s built a global community, played major festivals like Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, and Lollapalooza, and toured with artists including AJR, Pierce the Veil, and Mother Mother.

If his past music created a sanctuary, Running With Scissors asks: what happens when you step outside of that room and look yourself squarely in the eye? What are the gifts and curses inherited from family, and which parts do you carry forward or cut away? Written on the other side of a two-year healing process, the album finds Skinner older, braver, and galvanized, shading his trademark softness with rawer emotions without losing sight of the millions of fans who have grown up alongside him. “I want them to enter this new era with me and not feel like it’s for kids. Because I’m not a kid anymore,” he says. “I want it to feel like we’re moving forward together.”

The release of “Rainbow Gal” follows Cavetown’s recent single “Baby Spoon,” paired with its intimate, dreamlike video. Threaded with intergenerational tension, familial excavation, and love both soft and fierce, the songs on Running With Scissors mirror Skinner’s recent life changes, including falling in love with the person he wants to start a family with and the birth of his first sibling, with whom he shares a 26-year age gap.

On Running With Scissors, the album unfolds as a sweeping reflection on growth, identity, and the beauty of coming into one’s own. Cavetown uses intimate storytelling to explore themes of love, masculinity, vulnerability, and connection, while also turning toward the heavier realities of anxiety, self-doubt, and navigating life as a trans artist. Threaded throughout is a sense of reimagining adulthood, grappling with family, memory, and the process of self-parenting. Acoustic melodies and field recordings collide with hyperpop glitches and math-rock textures; whispers break into screams; and Skinner’s voice, once a stream of gentle murmur, now stretches and snaps with newfound range. “I wanted to make myself sound more brave,” he says. “And I wanted to impress people with my voice, like, ‘wow, he’s actually got some pipes.’”

Beyond his music, Cavetown continues to champion causes close to his heart. His This Is Home initiative has raised over $650,000 for LGBTQ+ organizations, further cementing his role not only as a musician but as a community builder.

“Rainbow Gal” and “Baby Spoon” are available now on all streaming platforms. Running With Scissors arrives January 16.
