A Unique Connection to the Philippines
What makes The Bayou extra special for Filipino fans? It was filmed right here in the Philippines! The country’s lush, waterlogged landscapes served as the perfect backdrop for the film’s visually stunning yet menacing environment. For 21 grueling days in late 2023, the production team worked alongside incredibly talented local crews to craft the expansive yet claustrophobic world of the Louisiana swamps.
Steven Hall, the film’s cinematographer, captured breathtaking shots of the Philippines’ verdant canopies and endless rivers, transforming them into a character in their own right. The production team even highlighted the rich local talent and hospitality, which played a crucial role in bringing this survival thriller to life.
On how they transformed Philippine jungles into the Louisiana swamps, director Brad Watson says, “We shot in the Philippines, which has a slightly different climate to the Louisiana swamps, but [cinematographer Steven Hall] being as brilliant as he was, he knew how to get the right amount of steam, smoke and atmosphere into the greenery into the swampland to make it feel like that sweaty heaty, humid Louisiana environment. So when Steven’s doing his masterful job of that in every shot, the bayou’s automatically starting to be a character.”
