Isang Himala, the acclaimed musical adaptation of Ishmael Bernal’s classic Himala, and Tumandok, a powerful drama that tackles the plight of the indigenous Ati peoples of Western Visayas, topped the nominations for the 5th Pinoy Rebyu Awards, handed out by the Society of Filipino Film Reviewers, with seven nods apiece.
Isang Himala, which premiered at the Metro Manila Film Festival (same as the original Himala that first screened at the 1982 MMFF), garnered nominations for Best Film, Best Director (Pepe Diokno), Best Supporting Performance (Kakki Teodoro), Best Ensemble, and for three technical categories (Cinematography, Production Design, and Film Score).
Tumandok, a Cinemalaya entry, secured nods for Best Film, Best Director (Richard Jeroui Salvadico and Arlie Sweet Sumagaysay), Best Screenplay, Best Lead Performance (Jenaica Sangher), Best First Feature, and two technical categories (Cinematography and Score).
Three other films are nominated for Best Film: Alipato at Muog, Green Bones, and Pushcart Tales. Of the five nominees for Best Film, two (Tumandok and Alipato at Muog) premiered at the Cinemalaya Film Festival, another two (Isang Himala and Green Bones) at the Metro Manila Film Festival, while Pushcart Tales first screened at the PureGold CinePanalo Film Festival.
Aside from Tumandok‘s Sangher, seven other actors will vie for the much-covered Best Lead Performance award: Sid Lucero (Outside), Jansen Magpusao (Gospel of the Beast), Enzo Osorio (The Hearing), Sue Prado (Your Mother’s Son), Marian Rivera (Balota), Vilma Santos (Uninvited), and Vice Ganda (And the Breadwinner Is…).
Apart from Isang Himala‘s Kakki Teodoro, five others are nominated for Best Supporting Performance: Shamaine Buencamino (Pushcart Tales), Donna Cariaga (A Lab Story), Nadine Lustre (Uninvited), Ruru Madrid (Green Bones), and Hazel Orencio (Phantosmia).
The acting categories of the Pinoy Rebyu Awards do not distinguish between men and women nominees, the way other award categories does not distinguish gender. SFFR rules also allow for more than 5 (but fewer than 10) nominees in the individual acting categories if actors receive a certain percentage of the total votes.
The Society of Filipino Film Reviewers’ 5th Pinoy Rebyu Awards celebrate the best achievements in Philippine cinema of 2024. For eligibility, members of SFFR considered all films released in the calendar year in at least one cinema in the Philippines or on a largely and legally accessible streaming service between January 1 and December 31, 2024. The SFFR is composed of 39 active reviewers of Philippine cinema.
