He has welcomed the island\u2019s guests, all with distinct fantasies, to come to the island where they will live out their dreams, but also with the promise and the warning: the results may not be what was intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Watch the film\u2019s new spot at <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/HuqXwQAMs00\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/HuqXwQAMs00<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Pe\u00f1a, last seen in the live-action film Dora and the Lost City of Gold, plays Mr. Roarke. I can\u2019t think of another actor who could have pulled that off,\u201d says director Jeff Wadlow. \u201cWe wanted to keep him in the shadows at first, to make him feel mysterious and elusive, then over the course of the film, pull back the layers and play with the audience\u2019s understanding of Roarke \u2013 sometimes he\u2019s funny, sometimes he\u2019s sinister, sometimes he\u2019s curt, sometimes he\u2019s overly formal. There\u2019s a large section of the film where the audience might wonder if Roarke is malevolent, that he somehow wants bad things to happen to these people. They\u2019ll be asking, hopefully, \u2018Why would he want that, is he trying to teach them a hard lesson?\u2019 We always want to keep the audience on their toes and keep them wondering, what is this guy\u2019s deal?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wadlow also notes that for much of the film, Roarke\u2019s relationship with the island is opaque. \u201cIs the island his, or is he part of the island? I think that relationship starts to become significant as the film progresses. We begin to question the power dynamic as the island starts to manifest as a character itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRoarke is on his own journey with Fantasy Island,\u201d says Pe\u00f1a. \u201cHe has one particular rule, which is to see each fantasy through to its natural conclusion. And he warns that fantasies often do not play out the way they are envisioned. Throughout, it\u2019s not clear \u2013 what is Roarke\u2019s relationship to the island. Who is the true orchestrator of the fantasies, Roarke or the island itself? Is Roarke the island\u2019s steward, like he claims \u2013 or does he control the island? Number one was the accent, with Montalb\u00e1n being Mexican.
