Released under <strong>Lilystars Records<\/strong>, Estepa\u2019s new EP, <em>Back To The Middle<\/em> grows closer to home with its penchant for warm, inviting hooks and sunburst instrumentation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lyrically speaking, there is no set thematic agenda when the acclaimed singer-songwriter conceptualized and penned <em>Back To The Middle<\/em>. In an authentic troubadour fashion, Estepa lets the song take him to where it wants to go most of the time. \u201cBut by the end I did notice a leaning towards the idea of letting go and acceptance,\u201d Estepa shares in a statement. \u201cLife throws us curveballs that we may not want or see coming, but then we ask ourselves how do we deal with them? There\u2019s always a slither of light ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While his previous record, <em>Sometimes I Just Don\u2019t Know <\/em>exhibited a more melancholic, brooding treatment, Estepa\u2019s six-song EP essentially gravitates on a balance between light and shade, with songs whose bright sparks pop up. Expanding his sonic palette with power pop choruses and irresistible exuberance, <em>Back To The Middle <\/em>sounds brighter and jumpier than he\u2019s never sounded before, and is buoyed with a renewed sense of energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new EP includes the weightlessly effervescent \u2018<strong>Trick Of The Light<\/strong>,\u2019 which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/en_asia\/news\/music\/watch-the-psychedelic-music-video-for-bryan-estepas-trick-of-the-light-2860594\"><strong>NME<\/strong><\/a> praised for \u201cevoking classic pop harmonies and alt-rock unease\u201d and the \u201890s alt-rocker \u2018<strong>Admit Now, Pay Later<\/strong>,\u2019 which garnered approval from <a href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/song-you-need-to-know-bryan-estepa-admit-now-pay-later-17297\/\"><strong>Rolling Stone Australia<\/strong><\/a> for heralding \u201ca change in his own approach to songwriting.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The title track \u2018<strong>Back To The Middle\u2019<\/strong> is particularly interesting in a way that it evokes a different kind of joy and feel-good melody on a resonant level. \u201cTo me, it\u2019s a good little upbeat pop tune that has all the hallmarks that I like in a song \u2013 a good hook, catchy harmonies and jangly guitars,\u201d Estepa explains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018<strong>Everything You Wanted\u2019<\/strong> changes gear with its wistful Americana-leaning power pop vista, while \u2018<strong>Little White Lie\u2019<\/strong> reveals itself to be a kaleidoscopic beauty of a tune that allows Estepa to experiment with keys, synth horns, baroque pop flourishes and artful backing harmonies. Rounding out the release is a lilting cover of Bob Dylan\u2019s \u2018I Threw It All Away,\u2019 from the 1969 album, <em>Nashville Skyline<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Back To The Middle<\/em><\/strong> was recorded during the pandemic period, and was a product of Bryan Estepa\u2019s eagerness to connect with people again, at least on a musical level. Needing to scratch a niggling creative itch, he got together with multi-ARIA and APRA award-winning Australian songwriter <strong>Josh Pyke<\/strong>, who helped shape the record with richness and timelessness embedded in its layers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Estepa, what makes the record a clear cut above the rest is how he gave way to Josh Pyke\u2019s production ideas and allowed the award-winning producer\u2019s creative spin to add magic to these songs. \u201cIt felt really good to let Josh Pyke take control of production duties from the moment I handed over a bunch of my demos to him,\u201d the pop-rock artist admits. \u201cI have normally come to the studio very much prepared with production and overall sound ideas. But we approached this differently in that we built each song over the day and sometimes even finished writing them together just before we hit record, like on \u2018Everything you wanted\u2019. It was exciting watching the songs unveil themselves as we were trying new arrangements, going with weird instrument choices and not being afraid to try anything that will make the song distinct in
