Obtains More Than 29,000 Patents Globally<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beijing, Hong Kong, December 14, 2022 \u2014 Xiaomi Corporation (\u201cXiaomi\u201d or the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGroup\u201d; stock code:1810), a consumer electronics and smart manufacturing<\/p>\n\n\n\n

company with smartphones and smart hardware connected by an Internet of Things<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(\u201cIoT\u201d) platform at its core, released its inaugural intellectual property (\u201cIP\u201d) white<\/p>\n\n\n\n

paper. The white paper showcases Xiaomi\u2019s IP achievements and its technological<\/p>\n\n\n\n

innovation capabilities. Currently, Xiaomi has entered 12 technological fields of<\/p>\n\n\n\n

research and development, including 5G mobile communication technology, big data,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

cloud computing and artificial intelligence, reaching 98 sub-segments. Technological<\/p>\n\n\n\n

innovation is the driving force behind Xiaomi\u2019s high degree of globalization with IP<\/p>\n\n\n\n

rights providing support and protection for further technological innovation in an<\/p>\n\n\n\n

efficient manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xiaomi has accumulated substantial achievements in IP across these areas. As of<\/p>\n\n\n\n

September 30, 2021, the Group ranked 13th worldwide in 5G self-declared patent<\/p>\n\n\n\n

families. As of September 30, 2022, Xiaomi has obtained more than 29,000 patents<\/p>\n\n\n\n

globally, covering more than 60 countries and regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wang Xiang, Partner and President of Xiaomi Corporation, introduced the Group\u2019s IP<\/p>\n\n\n\n

value proposition for the first time. He stated Xiaomi is dedicated to providing users<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with best-in-class technological innovation, respecting IP rights and offering<\/p>\n\n\n\n

diversified solutions to settle IP disputes. The Company is seeking to achieve a winwin,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

long-term and sustainable IP partnership and ultimately promote technology<\/p>\n\n\n\n

inclusion for the benefit of a wider community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The white paper shows the diverse and complex IP environment facing Chinese<\/p>\n\n\n\n

enterprises with global ambitions. By actively responding to lawsuits, signaling an<\/p>\n\n\n\n

openness to cooperation and striving to pursue a multilateral win-win strategy, Xiaomi<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xiaomi\u2019s IP Drives Business Innovation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After 12 years of development and driven by its \u201cSmartphone \u00d7 AIoT\u201d core strategy,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xiaomi has expanded its footprint in more than 100 markets around the world. The<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Company\u2019s businesses span across smartphones, smart TVs, smart large home<\/p>\n\n\n\n

appliances, wearables and internet services. Its research and development efforts<\/p>\n\n\n\n

were demonstrated in areas including smartphone operating system, imaging,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

charging, smart TV operating system, AI, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking MIUI as an example, strong patent protection supports continuous innovation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of the MIUI system. As of September 30, 2022, Xiaomi has more than 7,700 patents<\/p>\n\n\n\n

worldwide in terms of MIUI operating system and software functions. The Group also<\/p>\n\n\n\n

has more than 700 patents in smartphone charging technology, including but not<\/p>\n\n\n\n

limited to the underlying circuit architecture, safety management and transmission<\/p>\n\n\n\n

optimization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patent protection promotes the innovation inherent in Xiaomi smartphone\u2019s imaging<\/p>\n\n\n\n

technology. As of September 30, 2022, Xiaomi has more than 1,000 patents for<\/p>\n\n\n\n

imaging technology worldwide. Apart from elevating Xiaomi\u2019s smartphone user<\/p>\n\n\n\n

experience, the Company also strived to expand its 5G patent portfolio. By the end of<\/p>\n\n\n\n

September 2021, Xiaomi ranked 13th in 5G self-declared patent families. As at the end<\/p>\n\n\n\n

of September 2022, Xiaomi has led and participated in the formulation of more than<\/p>\n\n\n\n

260 national, industrial and group standards and its technical capabilities have been<\/p>\n\n\n\n

recognized by the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xiaomi\u2019s IP system has led to the development of a wide range of usage scenarios in<\/p>\n\n\n\n

its smart living ecosystem. After years of development, the Group held more than<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1,200 AI-related patents globally. Xiaomi\u2019s AI call noise reduction technology has been<\/p>\n\n\n\n

applied in more than 60 products, driving the company\u2019s business growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xiaomi is committed to \u201cTechnology for Good\u201d. Propelled by the Group\u2019s technological<\/p>\n\n\n\n

capabilities, Xiaomi gradually developed accessibility features in its MIUI operating<\/p>\n\n\n\n

system. For example, Xiaomi\u2019s haptic technology, ambient sound recognition and text to-<\/p>\n\n\n\n

speech technology are designed for users with visual, hearing and speech<\/p>\n\n\n\n

impairment respectively, allowing more underprivileged users to enjoy the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

convenience of technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IP Empowers Xiaomi\u2019s Global Ambitions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2013, Xiaomi\u2019s IP system was in its infancy focusing on protecting its self-developed<\/p>\n\n\n\n

technology and patenting its hardware and MIUI operating system. While focusing on<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mainland China, the Group made its foray into overseas markets such as Europe. As<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the Group\u2019s smartphone business experienced rapid development, it had caught<\/p>\n\n\n\n

patentees\u2019 awareness around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During 2014 to 2019, Xiaomi accelerated its development in overseas markets. Xiaomi<\/p>\n\n\n\n

took India and Southeast Asia markets as a starting point and stepped into European<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and Latin American markets gradually. Xiaomi\u2019s IP rights grew rapidly during the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

period with more than 2,000 global patent applications. From 2015 and onwards, the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

average annual global patent applications were approximately 6,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the period, Xiaomi faced complex IP disputes. Only five months after Xiaomi<\/p>\n\n\n\n

entered the India smartphone market in July 2014, the Group encountered a patent<\/p>\n\n\n\n

lawsuit with the global information and communication technology provider Ericsson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a five-year legal contest, Xiaomi and Ericsson finally settled the dispute amicably<\/p>\n\n\n\n

in September 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding non-practicing entity allegations, BlueSpike, a non-practicing entity,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

accused Xiaomi of infringing its patent rights on multiple smartphone models in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lawsuit ended with BlueSpike’s withdrawal of the lawsuit, reflecting how Xiaomi\u2019s<\/p>\n\n\n\n

intellectual property rights protect its business development efforts. Xiaomi has also<\/p>\n\n\n\n

secured legal judgments against Sisvel, IPCom and others, contributing to the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

establishment of the FRAND (\u201cFair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory\u201d) principle in<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the global IP field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through different means such as acquisition, cross-licensing and patent transfer,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xiaomi has accumulated significant patent achievements. In 2016, Xiaomi and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Microsoft expanded their global partnership. Xiaomi has made outstanding progress<\/p>\n\n\n\n

in IP globalization since 2020 and accumulated substantial achievements in<\/p>\n\n\n\n

intellectual property. As at the end of September, 2022, Xiaomi has obtained more<\/p>\n\n\n\n
