April 7, 2025<\/strong> \u2014 Internationally acclaimed artist and actress Grace VanderWaal <\/strong>releases her highly anticipated sophomore studio album, CHILDSTAR <\/em><\/strong>today via PULSE Records<\/strong>. Undoubtedly her most personal body of work to date, on CHILDSTAR <\/em><\/strong>VanderWaal amplifies the sound of healing scars, shedding skin, and stepping into her power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CHILDSTAR: Final Act<\/em><\/strong>, a short film co-directed by Grace VanderWaal <\/strong>with Luca Renzi <\/strong>and Jacob Boehme<\/strong>, and co-choreographed by VanderWaal and Renzi. The video features five captivating performances from CHILDSTAR<\/em><\/strong>, <\/em>including \u201cProud<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cBrand New<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cHomesick<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cBehavioral Problems<\/strong>,\u201d and \u201cFade<\/strong>.\u201d Heartbreaking, captivating and cathartic all at once, Grace bares her soul, sharing her experiences growing up in the public eye through song, dance and raw emotion in each of these five performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking about the album, Grace reveals, \u201cI felt for a long time I was a walking shadow of myself. I felt stolen. My name, my face, my body. While writing CHILDSTAR, I realized, I have something no one can take away, and that\u2019s my story. This album gifted me something I\u2019m eternally grateful for, and that\u2019s my power. To you reading, thank you endlessly for listening. I hope this album grants you a gift as it did to me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In \u201cProud<\/strong>,\u201d an old music box plays a lilting lullaby in the song\u2019s opening. \u201cPromise I\u2019ll be small. I won\u2019t take up space at all\u2026Ground yourself. Remember your place. You don\u2019t have a voice yet. You don\u2019t get to say,\u201d <\/em>she sings. Strings hang over a wave of distortion, climaxing on an affirmation, \u201c\u2018Cause you\u2019re so special.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs a kid, you have an undying need for validation,\u201d <\/em>Grace explains. \u201cIn some cases, you abandon yourself, and you aren\u2019t granted what you need mentally. You\u2019re choosing to be strong, only because it\u2019s your responsibility to be strong. You\u2019re adopting strength when it\u2019s not appropriate. It was important for me to use phrases like, \u2018\u2018Cause you\u2019re so special\u2019<\/em>, because they\u2019re weaponized words to control children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since you\u2019re young, you want to feel strong, mature, and grown up, but no kid should have to do all of those things. Proud is the story of the \u2018golden child\u2019 archetype. A child who neglects their needs in order to be seen as valued, loved, or mature. It\u2019s the first song off my new album CHILDSTAR.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bells toll and strings swoon on \u201cBrand New<\/strong>,\u201d the album\u2019s focus track. Her delivery barely cracks a whisper, overflowing with emotion. \u201cIt\u2019s about me being widely sexualized and objectified at a young age,\u201d <\/em>Grace explains. \u201cIt\u2019s important to talk about all of the different layers. You wonder, \u2018What if I dream of being a sexy woman? What if it\u2019s that something I want? Am I still just a girl at the end of the day? Am I subjecting myself?\u2019 It\u2019s a love-hate relationship and a commentary on the patriarchy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, there\u2019s \u201cHomesick<\/strong>.\u201d Against sparsely plucked acoustic guitar, Grace\u2019s vocals quake, \u201cI\u2019m homesick for a day that never happened<\/em>.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re romanticizing an unattainable memory,\u201d <\/em>she says. \u201cFor my entire childhood, I thought, \u2018When I have an apartment in New York City, everything will be okay.\u2019 Now, I\u2019m grown up, and I think, \u2018Everything would be okay if I was just waking up at seven and waiting for the school bus again\u2019. Nostalgia is painful. We always look back at a moment we considered to be the epitome of perfection, but was it ever real?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, Grace\u2019s words are about to make a bigger impact than ever. \u201cWhen I started writing the album, I thought it was going to fuck me all the way up,\u201d <\/em>she leaves off. \u201cI was really scared to open up these memories, because the art was going to be so raw. I realized the majority of the pain was because it was unspoken\u2014like this weird secret I was carrying around. It feels really good to undress the past. It gave me a voice and power when I had felt incredibly powerless before. Maybe these words can give somebody else power.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The arrival of CHILDSTAR <\/em><\/strong>follows a whirlwind 2024 for Grace VanderWaal<\/strong>, which included a spine-tingling performance at the 2024 Kennedy Center Honors and a featured role from the legendary<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Academy\u00ae <\/strong>Award-winning filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, <\/strong>in his epic, “Megalopolis<\/strong>,” starring alongside Academy Award\u00ae nominees Adam Driver <\/strong>and Laurence Fishburne<\/strong>. The film, which made its premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival<\/strong>, received a seven-minute standing ovation for the famed director\u2019s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VanderWaal\u2019s debut EP, Imperfectly Perfect <\/em><\/strong>was the biggest selling EP in 2016<\/strong>, entering the Billboard 200 albums chart at number nine. The following year, she released her first full-length studio album, Just The Beginning <\/em><\/strong>to vast critical acclaim. Between releasing music, she has toured with everyone from Florence + the Machine <\/strong>to Imagine Dragons<\/strong>. Among many accolades, she earned a Teen Choice <\/em>Award in addition to receiving the Billboard <\/em>\u201cWomen in Music\u201d Rising Star Award and becoming \u201cthe youngest person ever\u201d <\/em>to be featured on the Forbes 30 Under 30 <\/em>music list. Not to mention, she starred as the title character in the Disney+ film series Stargirl <\/em>and Megapolis<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finding herself independent again in 2024, she dove into creating what would become her next musical statement. With a pen in hand, she\u2019s writing the next chapter of her story\u2014on her own terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
