(April 11, 2025) \u2014 Why is it that the moment a man starts using skincare, people question his masculinity?  In a patriarchal and conservative society like the Philippines, when a man begins to use skincare, he would be suddenly labeled as \u201cgirly,\u201d \u201cmetrosexual,\u201d or \u201ctoo vain.\u201d But why has men\u2019s basic grooming become so controversial?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This mindset isn\u2019t just outdated \u2013\u2013 it\u2019s rooted in sexism. \u201cGirly\u201d hobbies have long been considered inferior to their male counterparts. We\u2019ve seen it in how boyband fangirls are seen as \u201ccrazy\u201d and \u201crabid\u201d and yet equally enthusiastic male sports fans are called \u201cpassionate\u201d and \u201cloyal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But skincare has always been essential for everyone, regardless of gender identity. And here\u2019s why:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Breaking the Stigma Around Men and Skincare<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For decades, men have avoided using skincare because some advertisements convinced them it would make them \u201csissies.\u201d But here\u2019s the reality: everyone has skin and they should take care of it. Some men may think they\u2019re \u201cmanlier\u201d if they avoid using skincare because it\u2019s \u201ctoo girly.\u201d But honestly, that\u2019s just doing them more harm than good. After all, healthy skin is also a sign of good health. As the body\u2019s largest organ, the skin shields you from bacteria, pollution, and environmental stressors. Hence, poorly maintained skin can indicate that a person is neglecting their overall health and wellness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, if you\u2019ve been avoiding skincare because of outdated gender norms, it\u2019s time to let that go. Because in the end, having damaged skin isn\u2019t a symbol of your unbreakable masculinity.
