That\u2019s what&nbsp;<strong><em>Mga Awit sa J.P. Rizal&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>is about \u2014 a new album of original Filipino tunes written by a group of siblings who call themselves&nbsp;<strong><em>Melladys<\/em><\/strong>, and brought to life by some of the country\u2019s most respected professional musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The album was produced by Filipino jazz legend&nbsp;<strong>Johnny Alegre<\/strong>, who also gathered the all-star cast of collaborators. Alegre, known for his work as a bandleader and trailblazer in the Philippine jazz scene, recognized the heart and sincerity in the Melladys&#8217; songs and envisioned an album that would re\ufb02ect that same authenticity and artistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To record the album, Johnny brought together a stellar roster of Filipino musicians: Medwin Mar\ufb01l (Truefaith), Jazz Nicolas (The Itchyworms), Mikey Amistoso (Ciudad, The Itchyworms), Noel Mendez, Joey Puyat (Blue Rats, Kiss the Bride), Rommel dela Cruz (formerly with Barbie\u2019s Cradle and Freestyle), Paolo Manuel (Kosmikskala, The Jerks), Kakoi Legaspi (Dong Abay Music Organization, Rivermaya), Johnny Alegre himself, Marga Jayy, and more. Ria Villena-Osorio (formerly of Bamboo) also contributed as an arranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Melladys&nbsp;<\/strong>is a wordplay on \u201cMella,\u201d the surname of \ufb01ve siblings \u2014 Alejandro Khasim, Ynocencio Ramel, Gabriel Thaib, Lolita Shaira, and Ephraim Tahir. In the 1970s, the Mella siblings, then<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>teenagers, formed a group called Tanglaw, playing songs on guitar and piano while living in Rizal Village, Makati, near J.P. Rizal Street \u2014 the inspiration behind the album\u2019s title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khasim, the eldest, passed away in 1984 \u2014 a loss that left a lasting mark on the family and their music. Today, Thaib, Shaira, and Tahir are based in the United States with their families, while Ramel lives in Manila and oversees the family\u2019s properties in Sorsogon. Despite time and distance, they never let go of their youthful dream of one day recording their original songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That dream began to take shape when Ramel reconnected with Johnny Alegre, a former o\ufb03cemate from Ayala Corp.&nbsp;<em>\u201cI started work on one song, which was a lot of fun, and then the next,\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>Johnny recalls.&nbsp;<em>\u201cBefore we knew it, an album\u2019s worth of really good OPM was made.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at the lyrics and structure of the songs, Johnny says they reminded him of a generation that made music for the joy of it, free of rules or formulas.&nbsp;<em>\u201cThey tell the story of an extended family of young friends who gathered after school to create songs without contrived emotion<\/em>,\u201d he says.&nbsp;<em>\u201cIn many ways, they re\ufb02ected my own experiences as a budding songwriter, as many of us were from my generation, when we just made things up as we went along, and there were no rules.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On his choice of musicians to record the album with The Melladys, Johnny says:&nbsp;<em>\u201cI felt the songs deserved the best possible creative minds. Jazz Nicolas, Ria Villena-Osorio, Noel Mendez and the rest are topnotch. I had them involved the same way I would have the best people for my own original work.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The album\u2019s love songs and life re\ufb02ections come in many forms.&nbsp;<strong>\u201cIkaw, Ako\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>(with Marga Jayy and Mark Laygo on vocals) explores a couple\u2019s devotion, while&nbsp;<strong>\u201cBituin\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>(sung by Tahir Mella) describes a romantic prospect as an unreachable star.&nbsp;<strong>\u201cKailangan Ka\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>(by Medwin Mar\ufb01l) offers hope amid despair, and&nbsp;<strong>\u201cIto\u2019y Para Sa Iyo\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>(sung by Mikey Amistoso) draws inspiration from nature.&nbsp;<strong>\u201cDambana\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>(by Carla Guevarra and David Ezra) expresses faith and commitment, while&nbsp;<strong>\u201cPangarap\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>(by Medwin Mar\ufb01l) re\ufb02ects on overcoming challenges.&nbsp;<strong>\u201cGintong Panaginip\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong>(by Tahir Mella) captures the spirit of daydreaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though folk-inspired at its core,&nbsp;<em>Mga Awit sa J.P.
