MANILA, Philippines, 19 October 2026 \u2014 <\/strong>The Philippines\u2019 digital payments market has expanded rapidly. InstaPay processed a record 4.7 billion transactions in 2025, while QR Ph person-to-merchant payments reached 2.5 billion<\/a>, reflecting how deeply digital transactions are becoming part of everyday commerce.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As that foundation matures, the next shift may be less about getting consumers online and more about what happens when artificial intelligence (AI) begins to play a larger role in the purchase journey itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Often described as agentic commerce, the model could allow AI tools to move beyond helping consumers search and compare, as well as support such actions as placing an order or initiating payment within instructions set by the customer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the payments industry, that raises a practical question: if the customer is not manually confirming every step, how do merchants know that the transaction still reflects what the customer intended? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Eng Sheng Guan, CEO of Fiuu, the fundamentals of payments remain the same even as more of the purchase journey becomes automated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCustomers still need confidence that every transaction is authorised, secure, and reliable. As AI plays a greater role in facilitating purchases, the important thing is ensuring that it acts with the customer\u2019s permission and within clearly defined limits.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Permission becomes part of the payment journey<\/strong> <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In a conventional digital transaction, consumers typically move directly through each stage, from choosing a product to confirming payment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agentic commerce could change that sequence. A customer might, for example, instruct an AI tool to buy an item within a set price range, make a repeat marketplace purchase, or complete a travel booking if certain conditions are met. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That makes the scope of the customer\u2019s permission increasingly important. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe first consideration should be customer permission,\u201d Eng explained. \u201cCustomers need to understand what they are allowing an agent to do and have the ability to change or withdraw those permissions for future purchases. Identifying the customer and obtaining payment approval are important, but neither establishes the full scope of what the agent was permitted to do.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The distinction matters when circumstances change. If a product exceeds an agreed price, the preferred option is unavailable or the terms of a booking shift significantly, businesses may need to determine whether the purchase can still proceed or whether the customer should be brought back into the decision. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trust becomes even more important<\/strong> <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For the Philippines, that question sits within a wider conversation about confidence in digital payments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While adoption has grown strongly, trust remains an important factor for some consumers. In a Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas survey<\/a>, 55% of respondents who did not use digital payments cited a lack of confidence in security as one reason for non-use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As commerce becomes more automated, payment innovation must continue making transactions seamless while ensuring security remains a priority, particularly in markets like the Philippines where building confidence in digital payments remains important as adoption expands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That does not mean more automated commerce needs more visible checks at every stage. Instead, the challenge is to keep the experience simple while ensuring that customers and merchants can clearly understand what has been authorised. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Payment providers, merchants, and platforms may need stronger signals around authorised activity, secure payment credentials, and reliable transaction records, while much of that complexity continues to sit in the background. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If something goes wrong, customers should also have a straightforward way to understand what happened and seek assistance, even where several parties were involved in completing the purchase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where businesses may encounter this first<\/strong> <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Agentic commerce is still developing, so businesses do not need to overhaul their payment environments yet. A more practical starting point is to consider where greater automation could realistically fit within the customer’s journey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Repeat marketplace purchases, travel bookings, and recurring digital services are among the areas where these models could emerge first because customers can define clear conditions in advance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A traveller, for example, could specify an acceptable price, preferred timing, and alternatives for a transport service. Some changes may remain within those instructions, while others may require the customer to make a fresh decision. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The key is establishing that boundary clearly. Businesses need to know when an automated purchase can continue as instructed and when control should return to the customer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The regional question is interoperability<\/strong> <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The challenge becomes more complex as Philippine consumers and businesses transact across Southeast Asia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An automated purchase may need to navigate different combinations of cards, wallets, bank transfers, QR systems, currencies, and approval requirements across markets. What works within one payment environment may not translate neatly into another. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This makes interoperability an important part of the agentic commerce discussion. The question is not only whether AI can support more of the purchase journey, but whether the underlying payment ecosystem can do so consistently across different methods and markets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe long-term value of agentic commerce will not come from automation for its own sake. It will depend on whether we can make these new experiences easier to support while keeping customer permission, control, and payment security clear throughout the transaction,\u201d concluded Eng. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the Philippines, where digital payments have already moved firmly into the mainstream, the next phase may depend just as much on preserving confidence as on adding new technology. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
