Action sequences become boring for \u201cClayface\u201d director James Watkins when they\u2019re generic and not tethered to something that\u2019s at the core of the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like love scenes; they\u2019re boring when they\u2019re two people naked in bed. They\u2019re interesting when they inform character and who these people are,\u201d says the filmmaker. \u201cIt\u2019s the same with action sequences. They have to be imbued with character. Otherwise, anyone can do anything with enough resources and enough stunts. It becomes about people punching each other and I get \u2018stunt fatigue.\u2019 I can\u2019t bear it when heroes in movies suddenly become Navy SEALs when they\u2019re really ordinary people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Matt Hagen \/ Clayface (played by Tom Rhys Harries), Watkins made sure that Matt\u2019s transition to a superpowered individual is believably rooted in the character\u2019s background. \u201cIn talking about Matt with the stunt crew and everybody, it was always, \u2018He\u2019s an actor,\u2019\u201d shares Watkins. \u201cIt\u2019s not that he suddenly has this incredible ability to fight \u2013 but what he does have is this ability to shift, so he can ambush people. And as a brilliant actor, his superpower has a superpower. So, it becomes about the evolution or discovery of his powers throughout the sequence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStealth, deception, surprise. If someone punches him, and that punch happens to go through his face and the guy hits a wall, then he\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, wow!\u2019 He\u2019s learning as we\u2019re learning, and there\u2019s this dark glee when he\u2019s learning it. That \u2018dark glee\u2019 was important to me. The playful tone. The \u2018permission to enjoy.\u2019 When you are enjoying the ride with Matt, laughing with him, it makes it much more complicated when he crosses a line!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Producer Matt Reeves, who directed 2022\u2019s critically acclaimed \u201cThe Batman,\u201d breaks down what he thinks is interesting about \u201cClayface.\u201d \u201cI think what\u2019s exciting about this kind of origin story is this idea of doing an anti-hero horror story, where you\u2019re going through a journey with someone and you\u2019re seeing them go into areas that are very\u2026 I mean, on top of being a combination of a romance and a sort of horror thriller, it\u2019s also really a revenge story,\u201d says Reeves. \u201cSo, to go on that journey where you\u2019re on that razor\u2019s edge \u2013 you know this person\u2019s doing the wrong things but you\u2019re digging into the psychology of it, along with the horror of his actions \u2013 that\u2019s a very exciting way to get into the Clayface story. And I think James Watkins did an incredible job with that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of the film\u2019s own origin story, Reeves shares that he first thought of what would eventually become \u201cClayface\u201d after working on \u201cThe Batman\u201d: \u201cAfter \u2018The Batman,\u2019 I was very excited about this idea. \u2018The Batman\u2019 was not a Batman origin story, but what it did \u2013 because it was his first appearance in the city \u2013 it was an entree into origin stories for the Rogues\u2019 Gallery. After the movie, when we started working on the script for the next Batman, we began thinking it\u2019d be really exciting to develop a bunch of stories that could be genre stories that related to the Rogues\u2019 Gallery characters and explore their origins. And one of the things I got very excited about was the idea of looking for ways to do really cool, smaller horror films. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd [Screenwriter] Mike Flanagan came to me and said he had been a huge fan of Clayface \u2013 especially the iteration that came from the animated series \u2013 and had a passion about doing a horror story with Clayface at the core. So, we started developing it. And as that story started coming together, becoming this sort of tragic love story \u2013 \u2018The Fly\u2019 meets this horror thriller \u2013 James [Gunn] and Peter [Safran] took over DC Studios, and that was one of the first things we pitched to them. They loved it so much, they wanted to make it one of the DCU movies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

For Naomie Ackie, who plays Dr. Caitlyn Corr, working on \u201cClayface\u201d was \u201cjust awesome. It\u2019s genuinely a dream come true. I have wanted to be in a comic book film since I was like 11!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ackie says that what interested her most about her character, a scientist, and Matt Hagen, an actor, is that they \u201ccome from a similar background. They are really hungry for acclaim, for being noticed for doing something that makes a difference, especially for Caitlyn. So, it\u2019s a very tempting thing to have someone saying, \u2018Hey, I want your help and I think we can make this work\u2026 and I\u2019ll do anything.\u2019 And she responds, \u2018Okay, I\u2019ll give it a go.\u2019 There\u2019s a bit of a mad scientist about Caitlyn. It\u2019s the similarity in their characters and their desperation to be seen and acknowledged that leads to ambition really getting the better of her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rhy Harries, who plays the titular Gotham City villain, says it was interesting to try to get under the skin of a character that can shapeshift. \u201cI was aware of Clayface as a character from watching the Batman cartoon series when I was younger,\u201d he shares. \u201cIt\u2019s interesting when you have a character that is able to shapeshift into anybody or anything \u2013 how do you get under the skin of a character who can do that? When we meet Matt in this movie, he has no concept of Clayface. He\u2019s just trying to maintain his life. You have a person who has everything at the start of the film \u2013 he has an ideal career and life. What interested me moving through that is what is underneath anybody\u2019s aspiration to achieve. And what I ended up thinking a lot about is the concept of running towards something or running away from something. Sometimes, we\u2019re not sure whether we\u2019re running away or toward \u2013 and those two things aren\u2019t mutually exclusive. I think Matt realizes throughout the film what his priorities are, and what happens to him sort of clarifies certain things for him, which in turn drives him to do the things he does.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
