It was\u00a0<\/span>50 years ago that the Beatles performed in their last ever public concert and now<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0a new\u00a0<\/span>film\u00a0<\/span>looks back at the early touring years<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

The Beatles final live concert at Candlestick Park, San Francisco, Aug, 29, 1966<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>They ripped through Little Richard\u2019s Long Tall Sally, as they had a thousand times before, then they were off.<\/span>For the last time.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The Beatles, the first band to make sports stadiums their stage were turning their backs on stadiums<\/span>, stages and live audiences—for<\/span>ever.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The crowd wasn\u2019t told, nobody knew, maybe they didn\u2019t quite know themselves but one thing they did know<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0they\u2019d had enough of it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Back\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>hen<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>audience<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0is not really the word<\/span>\u00a0to describe the spectators<\/span>. They, mostly girls, didn\u2019t go to Beatles concerts to listen, they went\u00a0<\/span>there\u00a0<\/span>to scream.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Nobody took in the music and that included the Beatles. They couldn\u2019t hear themselves play. It was, said\u00a0<\/span>Ringo,<\/span>\u00a0it was turning them into bad musicians.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In 1963 a British journalist, writing about the\u00a0<\/span>Moptops<\/span>\u00a0and their fans came up with the term<\/span>Beatlemania<\/span>. It was no more than the truth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>It really was a mania. Rudolph Valentino had crowds of idolatrous women, Frank Sinatra had his bobbysoxers, today\u2019s celebrities court and complain about media harassment, but none\u00a0<\/span>have\u00a0<\/span>ever experienced anything like this.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They were terrific together in every way: sharp, clever, funny and quick. If John was the wittiest and had edge, Paul was twinkly and charming and George and Ringo often had a good line.\u00a0Liverpudlians have a way with words and from the start their playing, their singing, their harmonies,\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>their confidence were utterly captivating. Whether you were a music fan or not, a teenager or not, a girl or not, From Me\u00a0<\/span>To<\/span>\u00a0You struck a chord of recognition \u2013 this was something wonderful, something special that we were going to love.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>moptop<\/span>\u00a0haircuts and Beatle suits (forced on them by their manager Brian Epstein) helped too. We knew we loved them, we didn\u2019t yet know they were geniuses (or, as the late Ian MacDonald, author of a great book on the Beatles says, Lennon and McCartney together were \u201ca genius\u201d).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What we see in the Eight Days\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>\u00a0Week film is not so much their genius as songwriters, it\u2019s the magic of their presence and their brilliance as performers, their personality and the evidence that they had something about them that nobody else has ever matched. You don\u2019t need to be looking through rose-tinted bifocals to see how magical they were.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Beatles: Eight Days\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>\u00a0Week \u2013 The Touring Years, an enjoyable feature-length film\u00a0<\/span>for release<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in cinemas September 21<\/span>, captures the glorious madness of it all.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Whether\u00a0<\/span>were around at the time<\/span>\u00a0or not<\/span>, it comes as a shock to see how crazy it was.\u00a0<\/span>And e<\/span>ven if you\u00a0<\/span>do\u00a0<\/span>remember, it\u2019s a joy to be reminded how utterly wonderful the Beatles were. They were a brilliant band, forged by Liverpool\u2019s Cavern, numberless hours playing in Hamburg and on the road.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Through all the madness, the pressure, the travel, the work, the interviews, the hysterical fans, the crazed love, the threats, what kept them sane and sustained them was their four-in-oneness.\u00a0<\/span>And their influence continues to this day.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
