REVIEW: Extraction 2: Chris Hemsworth is back in much improved sequel

A big improvement from its predecessor, Extraction 2 sees Chris Hemsworth back as black ops mercenary Tyler Rake after being officially dead in the first film. He goes through some serious therapy to recover from his injuries, the whole montage reminding me of when Tanjiro and friends have to spend some time recovering after near-death experiences battling insanely strong flesh eating demons in Kimetsu No Yaiba.

There’s a new mission, but this time it’s a little more personal. Which is a good thing, as we get to learn more about Tyler Rake’s character.

Admittedly, the story and the plot is fairly predictable but the action and stunt sequences are top notch, and I wouldn’t expect anything less from director Sam Hargrave who, before sitting on the director’s chair was a stunt coordinator and even worked on Avengers: Endgame, he also has a bit role in the movie. If you do a re-watch of the first Extraction film Sam Hargrave plays the role of ‘G’.

The big one-take prison fight happens within 30 minutes of the movie! So you don’t have to wait long before what is possibly the biggest action sequence in the film to start. And don’t worry it’s not just one big action sequence but there are still a number of them throughout the movie.

Some sequences even feel like they were lifted directly from some serious shooter gameplay. You can point and say: ‘Hey! That looks straight out of a game!’ which is admittedly something that I did.

The body count is impressive and there are a number of gruesome deaths. I actually slapped/hit both my seatmates because of a couple of you’ll-turn-away-coz-its-too-violent-deaths.

The film is also about sons and fathers. A father, mourning the loss of his son, and carrying unspeakable guilt with him. We also have a son, learning that his father is not who he thought he was, and finding his own way in a world that can be cruel and violent. Audiences also get a front row seat to a wider acting range from Chris Hemsworth.

Also shout out to my girl, Italian-French actress Golshifteh Farahani who plays military contractor Nik Khan, and who is on Team Rake of course. She is a gorgeous badass who delivers a committed performance throughout the film.

I don’t know if they timed this for a Father’s Day release but its definitely the type of movie, you can enjoy at home with your dad and the whole family. Stream it on the biggest television with the best sound, get everybody together, have food and drinks, and just sit back and be entertained.

Extraction 2 streams June 16 on Netflix.
