IndieKa creates a platform for up and coming local musicians

This is the elevator pitch. “It’s the Tiny Desk Concert Series but for local musicians.’ but it’s actually more than that. IndieKa is a personal passion project of director Jasper Lawan. As a musician himself (he can get pretty mean behind the drum set). He knows that it can be challenging for up and coming local musicians to get their music out there.

“It’s a YouTube show that is heavily inspired from NPR tiny desk”.

Jasper gives me the pitch and I’m in.

We’ve known Jasper for a long time, years before the pandemic, years before Luke, we would run around local bars and gigs, watching local acts, and just enjoying the music. He went on to make a name for himself as a director and creative, while we continued on with the blog and I guess it was just about time that we would come together again for a project we are both passionate about: local music.

When asked to take back the layers to IndieKa, Lawan says:

IndieKa is a collective of creatives and filmmakers who dedicate their passion supporting independent creatives and visual performers. We deliver a unique and different kind of audio and visual treat from some of your favorite artists and creatives.

Why did you think about doing this kind of passion project?

There are a lot of talented independent creatives and musicians that don’t get the chance to have a proper platform to showcase their passion and work. Indieka believes in the magic of collaborative efforts with different artists that generates unique ideas and engaging content.

Through IndieKa, Lawan and his team aim to build a healthy and  thriving community of musicians and visual artists. And isn’t that just the dream?

Speaking of dreams, when asked for their dream collaboration Lawan says they are fans of local acts Ben&Ben and December Avennue. He adds: “Not only because of their music but because the of the impact that they made on younger generations.”

I’ve recently become a fan of the vivacious and enthralling ena mori and was thrilled to see a video of the indiaKa team from Mori’s Don’t Blame The Wild One’s album tour. The video was taken live at the Dirty Kitchen. You can watch it here:

Part of the lifeblood of local music, are the gigs in local bars and while going to these is an experience music lovers should at least go through in their lives as patrons of the arts. However, circumstances may not always make that possible, so what is the next best thing? Videos! Visceral videos that help you feel as if you’re there yourself. And indieKa can make that possible.

‘We’d love to see your work!’ Jasper says to local artists who may want to collaborate with the IndieKa team. Don’t hesitate to send us a message on our Facebook page!
