Movie Review: Yesterday

Admit it, the last few movies you’ve seen was probably a sequel, a prequel, a remake or a reboot; which is why Danny Boyle’s “Yesterday” is such a refreshing original and musical experience (best enjoyed in the cinema, preferably one with a great sound system).

You will sing, you will laugh and you will cry at this incredible charming feel good, romantic comedy, unlike any other.

Struggling singer songwriter Jack Malik (Himesh Patel) is about to give up on his dreams of making it big as a musician, something which his parents (whom he still lives with by the way) would probably approve of. Its only his manager/childhood friend Ellie (Lily James) who still believes in him.

Things take an unexpected turn when during a global accident Jack is hit by a bus, he flies through the air and crashes to the ground, sustaining injuries and losing two of his front teeth.

When he recovers he discovers that he now lives in a world that has forgotten all about The Beatles.

Desperate to finally reach his dreams, Jack uses the songs of the ‘fab four’ to become the world’s most popular singer-song writer; even more popular than Ed Sheeran who plays a slightly different version of himself in the movie.

Jack is suddenly thrown in the fast paced, image obsessed, money generating world of ‘fame and fortune’.

But how long can Jack live on the lie that his songs are not his and that Ellie who has always been in love with him is slowly skipping away?

Will Jack chose fame and “success” over love? And why the hell is there no Coke in this movie?

“Yesterday” is the kind of film which will have you smiling ear to ear throughout. Despite its “altered reality” premise it is surprisingly very grounded and the characters often find themselves in hilarious yet very real situations and this is such a big hoot to the audience.

There is an unexpected scene in the movie that takes you by surprise. It’s the kind that just catches your breath and will have the tears flowing, I know I was choked up in this scene. If you’re a Beatles fan this “scene” Alone makes the movie worth watching and it’s just a small nugget in a film filled with things to love.

9/10 – “Yesterday” is now showing in cinemas.
