“Sisterhood is powerful. I am of a generation that was about equality,” says Stockard Channing, back as Aunt Franny in “PRACTICAL MAGIC 2,” in cinemas September 9

“We all screamed a lot when we saw each other,” shares Stockard Channing about what it was like to be reunited with her “Practical Magic” costars Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman and Dianne Weist.

“It was that kind of thing. Shrieking,” the actress adds with a chuckle. “And it was very easy, I think. Saves a lot of time when you’ve worked together, because there’s a shorthand to everything and a trust. It really works.”

The actresses are back as Owens witches in “Practical Magic 2” – Bullock and Kidman as sisters Sally and Gillian, respectively, and Channing and Weist as their aunts Franny and Jet, respectively. In the sequel, the Owens sisters must confront the dark curse that threatens to unravel their family once and for all. Directed by Susanne Bier (“Bird Box,” “The Night Manager”), the film also features Sally’s daughters, all grown-up since the first film and played by Joey King “(Bullet Train,” “A Family Affair”) and Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones,” “The New Mutants”). Also joining the cast are Lee Pace (“The Hobbit” trilogy, MCU), Xolo Maridueña (“Blue Beetle,” “Cobra Kai”) and Solly McLeod (“Tom Jones,” “Fear”).

For Weist, being back with everyone was an extraordinary experience. “It’s extraordinary to be asked to come back and not repeat something, but expand it, something that you’ve done twenty-five years ago and with the same people. I haven’t experienced that before,” she shares.

In the original movie, women turned to Aunt Jet and Aunt Franny to help mend their broken hearts using love spells and potions. As to where the aunts are when we dive back into the sequel, Weist says that they are still offering their services to the folks in the town. “Absolutely, absolutely. Anyone who has arthritis or gout or a broken heart, anyone who has lost their lover, they come to Jet and my sister Franny, played by Stockard Channing,” shares Weist. “They come to them at night and we give them remedies to ease their pain, whatever type of pain it might be.”

Sisterhood is very important to the Owens women. And just like her character Franny, Channing embraces everything about sisterhood, especially what her generation has made possible for women today. “Well, given my advanced age, it means a lot to me, because I’m of that generation – sisterhood is powerful,” says Channing. “I’m proud of my feminist background. I am of a generation that was about equality. It was about equal rights. But I was born at a time when it was rough. It was really rough. I hope people remember and respect the gains that my generation made, and try to hold onto them.”
