Filipino crossover duo Bajula serenades music fans with an infectious and groovy take on R&B, soul, and pop on their new song “Catching You.”
Navigating lyrics about love and relationships with catchy hooks, intricately laced beats, and moody textures, the rookie act exudes confidence that translates an intricately produced jam into a debut tour-de-force.
The urban jam is accompanied by a self-produced music video helmed by the duo themselves, and Hennie Ken Avila, who also doubles down his work as a resident sound engineer. “The concept was basically just us introducing our style and music to the public; it’s just the two of us singing and showing our awkward dancing skills mixed with some retro 80’s vibe,” Alvin “Vertigo” Guanlao explains in a statement.
Imbibing New Jack Swing-inspired visuals in their perfectly worn vintage suits and long sleeves, Bajula grooves to the rhythm of the song awkwardly, as if trying to make a solid impression of a ‘90s R&B boyband. “The music video serves as an attempt to give their audience an idea on the actual song performance,” shares Jolo ‘Frazier’ Juatco. “As independent artists, it’s a humbling experience to take control of the visual narrative and reflect ideas on something that is representative of your art. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished so far as a creative team.”
The song will be part of the duo’s upcoming 7-track album, Sensual Dance Club, which was conceived in the middle of the pandemic.
“Given that we have been in the same band for the last decade, myself being the drummer and synths player, and Vertigo being the lead vocalist and guitarist for a band named Admiral Peppery, it was easy to start something new,” says Frazier. “During the recent wave of the pandemic, Vertigo and I had a concept about creating something different and is not the usual in terms of what we’ve previously done (like playing our usual instruments and style). To add, we always wanted to sing and groove to our songs without holding/playing our usual instruments.”
Bajula is a production duo composed of Alvin “Vertigo” Guanlao and Jolo “Frazier” Juatco.
“Catching You” is the first single off Bajula’s planned 7-track EP called ‘Sensual Dance Club.’ Watch the music video here.
