The Narrow Road (2022)
Set in the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong, director Lam Sum’s second full-length feature film, The Narrow Road, is a poignant story about two individuals trying to survive life’s curveballs. Chak (Louis Cheung, Ip Man 3) is a world-weary businessman who’s struggling to keep his one-man cleaning business afloat in the middle of a pandemic. When the job proves too much, he reluctantly hires Candy (Angela Yuen, Little Q), his feisty neighbor who is a single mother to a seven-year-old daughter, Chu (On Na Tong). As the three of them spend more time together, what was once initially a rocky relationship transforms into an unlikely bond, one that reminds viewers of the saving power of human connection during difficult times.
The Narrow Road was nominated for Best Leading Actor and Leading Actress and won Best Original Film Score at the 59th Golden Horse Awards. At the 29th Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards, it was nominated for Best Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Actress and bagged the award for Best Director for Lam Sum, Best Actor for Louis Cheung, and Films of Merit.
Lost Love (2022)
Recovering from the death of their three-year-old son, Chan Tin Mei (Sammi Cheng, Infernal Affairs) and Ho Bun (Alan Luk, The Paper Tigers) channel their grief into becoming a foster family. As the couple weather through the trauma of losing a child and face their own relationship issues, little by little, their foster children teach Mei and Bun to heal and be brave enough to love again. Ka Sing-Fung’s touching film on grief and foster parenthood won Cheng the Best Actress award at the Hong Kong Film Critics Society and the Hong Kong Film Awards.
Sunny Side of the Street (2022)
Kok Rui Lau’s feature debut follows Yat (Anthony Wong, Still Human), a Chinese taxi driver with a drinking habit and a bad temper who kills a Pakistani refugee in a car accident. Yat’s guilt pushes him to form an unexpected bond with Hassan (Sahal Zaman), the refugee’s son. Lau’s heartfelt film shines a light on the hardships refugees in Hong Kong have to live through. It won Zaman a Best New Performer award at the 41st Hong Kong Film Awards and bagged Best Leading Actor, Best New Director, Best New Performer, and Best Original Screenplay at the 59th Golden Horse Awards.
