Marvel to come out with Heroine-Centered Novels this June

Marvel will be trying their hand with a different medium and will be coming out with Heroine-Centered Novels this June. (Yeheeeeey!!!)

The first two novels will feature The She-Hulk and Rogue. Hyperion Books is joining Marvel with this project. The announcement came in today, Hyperion’s Editor-in-Chief Elisabeth Dyssegaard made the announcement and this is what she had to say about the deal:

“Marvel has had tremendous success with recent hit movies and we think it’s a great time to explore what happens to super heroines when they are dropped into traditional women’s novels.”

From the Marvel front, Ruwan Jayatilleke, Associate Publishers/SVP, Marvel Entertainment has said that: “It’s exciting to see Hyperion bring two of our most beloved female super heroes, Rogue and She-Hulk to life in ways you’ve never seen before. Whether you’re a long time fan of Marvel or new to super heroes, these novels deliver exciting stories that will capture your imagination”.

Both novels promise to feature ‘strong, smart heroines seeking happiness and love while battling cosmic evil.’

Personally I’m really excited for this and I hope that the novels will be very well writen. I’m actually having reservations and I’m honestly scared that the novels will turn out to be too reminiscent of a certain Vampire Franchise.

I swear If it turns out to be too ‘Twilightly’ I might choke on my own vomit, roll over and die. Here’s to hoping the book won’t be told in a  first-person voice that would remind me of Bella Swan.

The She Hulk will be featured in the novel ‘She-Hulk Diaries’ (I have a feeling a lot of people will be seeing green if it turns out to be another version of ‘The Carrie Diaries’)

The She-Hulk or Jennifer Walters’ challenges in the novel includes her corporate battles by day and a different kind of battle at night (against villains!) juggling all of these while (of course!) looking for Mr. Right. Paul says good luck to that but hey! Love moves in mysterious ways right? Who knows someone out there doesn’t mind a green girlfriend? :p

Aaand one of my personal favorite Marvel Super Heroines- Rogue will have her own feature novel! (definitely getting this one) ‘The Rogue Touch’ circles around a runaway Rogue after she puts her boyfriend in a coma. She meets the handsome and mysterious James who seems to be the only one who truly understands her. Rogue is put in a tight situation when she has to decide whether to reveal her powers to save James.

I’m actually very excited about this project although I do have my reservations as I have mentioned earlier. Although these novels will feature (super hero) heroines I hope that they don’t leave out on the action and that even the male fans will be happy with the novels.

Stieg Larsson’s the Millennium Trilogy’s Lisbeth Salander (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) featured an unlikely heroine but there was definitely no restrictions when it came to the action scenes.

I guess all my reservations also stems from all the young adult novels coming out. I’m really worried about how these novels will cater to fans who will span generations and will be coming from all different age groups. Although J.K. Rowling was able to accomplish this through her Harry Potter series.

There is really a lot riding into this – I’m hoping for unique story lines and twists in plots and surprises in corners. I’m hoping to want to turn the page to find out what happens next instead of wanting to burn the book in frustration.

There is really a lot of pressure on the authors of these novels. I would hate to be in their shoes. They might not see the light of day if fans don’t like the novels. I have no idea which direction the authors and the people behind the project are going to take. Are they going to try to win new fans and appeal more to a younger generation who might be familiar with the heroines only with the recently released films? Or will they try to please an older generation of fans who have been following these heroes when they were younger? Can they hit two birds with one stone?

I’m really rooting for this project to be a success and I guess we will all have to wait until June to see how it goes. ^_^

Are you guys excited for these novels? Which Super Heroines or Super heroes would you want to read in a novel?
