Movie Review: Abominable – A Beautiful Family Movie!

Movies about the Abominable Snowman and Yeti are nothing new and yet 2019’s “Abominable has to be the most visually beautiful in terms of its animation, like the scenes looked as if they were lifted right out of picture perfect desktop wallpapers. Having the plot of the story take the course of a journey to the Himalayas, was also a good opportunity to feature picturesque landscapes you absolutely can’t help but fall in love with.

Yi (Chloe Bennet) a young teenager in Shanghai, who recently lost her father and is having a difficult time coping with her loss, often distancing herself from her mother and grandmother, discover an injured Yeti on the top of her apartment building in Shanghai.

Along with her neighbors, the heartthrob Jin (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) and his cousin, the basketball obsessed Peng (Albert Tsai) the three unlikely adventurers set off on an epic adventure to bring the Yeti, whom they have named “Everest” home.

Of course, its not all rainbows and butterflies on their trip as they have to steer clear of Mister Burnish and Dr. Zara who want to capture Everest.

Although borrowing themes from familiar films like (E.T. The Extraterrestrial) “Abominable” is still a refreshing family movie in its own right. With its beautiful animation and nature inspired settings, they all seemed as if they were lifted from a desktop wallpaper. The film encompasses the value of perseverance, of moving against the current, moving forward despite the difficulties and it also gives importance to the value of family. Jokes were well placed and I found myself laughing more than I thought I would. A nice twist in the story is a welcome surprise.

Perfect for the family. Bring the kids to see it. Mom, Dad and the adults will enjoy it as well. After seeing the movie, your kids may want to take up animation or learn how to play a musical instrument (Yi plays the violin) and I think that’s always a plus! (9/10).
