Movie Review: Hobbs & Shaw – Delivers Full Throttle Action from Start to Finish!

I have a confession to make, I have not seen one “Fast and Furious” film ever. The genre was never really my cup of tea (so is Horror) but as I have come to review movies over the years I have learned to watch more films of different genres.

We’ll I’m glad to say that I actually enjoyed “Hobbs and Shaw” more than I thought I would. Granted that I knew what I was getting into from the start. A two hour testosterone overdrive of action and stunt sequences from start and finish and well, the film did not dissapoint, it was one fight scene after another, from hand to hand combat, gun fights and thrilling car chases.

Yes, most of the stunts seem to defy all the laws of physics and gravity but that’s what makes it so entertaining and which is why you will also find yourself at the edge of your seat for a good part of the movie.

Aside from the fights and car chases I thoroughly enjoyed “Hobbs and Shaw” for its comedy, the chemistry and banter between Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Dereck Shaw is just hilarious. Their palpable hate and disdain for each other is brought to a comedic performance, so perfectly timed its like a natural dance between the two, it takes two to tango after all.

A special treat to the audience was the many cameos in the film which could possibly mean a new team in the future.

Special shout out to Vanessa Kirby, who plays the femme fatale Hattie Shaw (and her infallible eyeliner and eyeshadow that seemed to survive their globe trotting adventure with all the explosions happening left and right) she was really able to step up to the role and be in a scene toe-to-toe (and sometimes even fist to face) with more experienced actors like Johnson and Statham. She really brings “girl power” to the movie, which I suppose is also a nice balance to the testosterone fueled scenes between Hobbs and Shaw.

Idris Elba AKA “Black Superman” was a formidable adversary his stunts (especially the ones on the motorcycle) were just jaw dropping and impressive.

The film may have been a tad too long but it was still an enjoyable ride. I appreciated the lessons on family which it also had.
