“A Whisker Away” – A Delightful Watch

“I was sick of his world, but now I know it isn’t so bad.”

A delightful Netflix Anime (film), “A Whisker Away” follows the popular young love + fantasy with lessons on life formula. This one, lighter and more kid friendly than they usually are. We meet Miyo (AKA “MUGE” – Miss Ultra Gaga and Enigmatic) a cheerful and energetic high school student who is secretly hiding problems at home.

Miyo/Muge is given a magical mask that transforms her into a white cat, she uses this ability to spend time with her classmate Hinode, whom she has a huge crush on.

A pretty straightforward analogy is how Miyo/Muge uses the mask to hide from her “human” problems and when she is overwhelmed by her troubles, the thought of staying a cat forever is starting to become more and more appealing to her.

More comedy, than drama, I enjoyed “A Whisker Away” which was a light and easy watch, something you can even see with your younger siblings or nephews/nieces no awkward scenes, I promise. It’s all good, clean and very GP.

Despite its kid friendly nature, the lessons in the film are very real, as they tackle with depression, not wanting to live your life anymore and wanting to run away from your problems (in this case, turn into a cat forever). I am also reminded of the heavy pressures which young adults seem to find themselves in. Miyo was abandoned by her home and is now dealing with living with a stepmom. She pretends she’s okay and smiles and laughs, when there is a lot of anger inside of her.

I also enjoyed how a lot of the supporting characters in the film had a lot to do with the plot and we’re just “scarecrows” in the background. It was a good change and pushed the story to become less of a cliche. I had a big laugh when a big confrontation scene, complete with slapping turned out to be entirely hilarious.
