I’M NOT OKAY WITH THIS

I was going to put off watching this new Netflix series due to, well alot of pending write ups to do, but with a 30 minute format and 8 episodes and spit fire dialogue and plot, how can I resist?

Based on the graphic novel by Charles Forsman, (it is important to note, that this is the second adaptation of a Forsman novel with Jonathan Entwistle at the helm, the first, is the well loved “The End of the F***ing World”) the series follows Sydney Novak (Sophia Lillis, who is joined by her “It” co-star Wyat Ollef) the new kid in town, who deals with the aftermath of her father’s suicide, all while going through the complexities of High School, the akwardness of being a teenager and you know, super powers.

You see, whener Sydney is overcome with emotion, whenever she’s angry or embarassed, things happen, object fly, there is epistaxis, you know, normal stuff.

Not being familiar with the source material, I dismissed the trailer for having some very familiar plots and themes like Stephen King’s “Carrie” or even more recently “Stranger Things” – where the female leads deal with telekinetik abilities. Some early promotional material for “I’M NOT OKAY WITH THIS” even had Sydney running down the street covered in what seems to be, blood, yes, very Carrie.

Even with the similarities “I’m Not Okay With This” still has its own charm, which can be attributed to when the audience get to actually hear what Sydney is thinking, or saying to yourself (then the exact opposite of which comes out of her mouth). It’s blunt, its honest and its real. Using the same formula from “The End of the F***ing World” the series also has the same good choice in music, even its sudden plays and stops.

I AM NOT OKAY WITH THIS

WIth an explosive end to its first season, we can only hope for a second one, because (Damn!) you know that things are just about to get all the more interesting
