Movie Review: Downton Abbey is a Delightful Family Reunion

At the height of its popularity around 2010 -“Downton Abbey” the series has always been one of those series which I told myself that I would watch, being a fan of historical drama but unfortunately never got around to do doing so.

Fast forward to 2019 and it was days before I was seeing the “Downton Abbey” movie I discovered that all 6 seasons are on Amazon Prime, which we had a subscription to, so I binge watched as much of the series I could and was about mid Season 2 when I saw the movie, of course I was spoiled by a couple of major, major events revealed in the movie but totally my fault. I’m still binge watching the series and am currently on Season 4.

I did still enjoy the movie (minus the spoilers) more than I thought that I would. It helped that I had a sort of background into the story and characters. Mind you that even if you have not seen a single Downton Abbey episode you could still enjoy the movie. Its easy enough to follow and after about 15-20 minutes of watching will have some idea as to the dynamics of the characters. Of course if you are a fan of the series, you should not miss the movie! I cannot stress that enough!

The King and Queen of England are coming to Downton Abbey to visit! The whole house is in a flurry for the royal visitors! The servants are overcome with excitement! Tom Branson, the Grantham’s Irish son-in-law’s loyalties will be tested and the Dowager Lady Grantham (Maggie Smith) has a score to settle with an old relative. There are numerous plot lines but all are addressed well and you just can’t help but find yourself rooting for Team Downton!

Downton Abbey The Movie – is a jolly family reunion for fans of the series, it is as charming and pleasant as English tea in the afternoon. And if you haven’t seen a single episode-you need not worry as the plot is easy to follow and the dynamics of the beloved characters of Downton easy to figure out. Its like a warm homecoming, I couldn’t help but smile and laugh the whole time. Maggie Smith’s lines as the sharp and witty Lady Grantham are an absolute delight! 7.5/10
