Music: B.P. Valenzuela shows that she has more up her sleeve in diverse E.P. “Paradigm Shift”

“Paradigm Shift”is a 6 track E.P. from Filipina producer, electronic artist B.P. Valenzuela under the mantle “half-lit” her side project. As a fan of Valenzuela’s 2015 album “The Neon Hour” I was pleasantly surprised when the first track from the E.P. “Empty Houses” played, it was indeed a ‘paradigm shift’ from her brand of electro-pop music to which she is more known for, as the track featured guitars, drums and was more raw and organic, instead of being electric, which is more of Valenzuela’s niche. Plus the opening lyrics “I fell asleep in Friday’s clothes and Tuesday grabbed me by the legs” are catchy and charming (we all had those days).

There’s even a hint of folk pop in the EP which can be heard on “fri the 13th”, don’t worry you still get to hear her electro-pop genius manifest itself in “backspace me”. My favorite is “23 mistakes” which feature the poignant lyrics: “Why do I make 23 mistakes for every good decision?” -and as they say “I felt that” or I guess that in this crazy world we all come to a point in time when we feel like everything in our life just seems to be going out the window. And did I mention the lyrics are arranged in such a way that you just want to song your heart out?

Just a thought if B.P. was 19 when “The Neon Hour” came out that would make her 23 now-and thus “23 mistakes” (Mind blown!) and this of course are all just speculation, would love to get to ask her to confirm. And yes! She’s incredibly talented to have created and produced this much music at 23. It’s always refreshing to think that OPM is more than just ‘artistas’ getting record deals or pretty faces doing covers. There are incredible artists like Valenzuela who swim against the tide and who march to the beat of their own drum, electric or otherwise.

“Paradigm Shift” is now streaming on Spotify. I also recommend you listen to her 2017 single “B.B girl” and 2015 album “The Neon Hour”.
